NiMC began with the sole purpose of educating teachers about forced marriage. Just before it became a criminal offence in June 2014, Charlotte worked with the Forced Marriage Unit on a presentation for the National Conference on the Criminalisation of Forced Marriage. The presentation focussed on the problems and practicalities of securing prosecutions under the new law, and it quickly became clear that the only way to effectively protect those at-risk of forced marriage is to engage teachers and schools.
Together, we have delivered workshops for primary and secondary school teachers, Teach First participants, frontline professionals and anyone else who is interested in learning more about forced marriage and how to tackle it. In 2016, we worked with IKWRO and Youth for Change to organise the first ever National Schools’ Conference on “Honour” Based Violence which was a huge success. Unfortunately, a lot of work still needs to be done, as this headline from April 2017 makes pretty clear:
So, if you’re a teacher, parent, student, governor or member of staff, please do check out Our Workshops and Resources. We’re always looking for more ways to spread the NiMC message so if you have any ideas, projects or thoughts, please email us at email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org.
